A Clinical Study Found This Plant Helped Lower Hashimoto’s Antibodies
What researchers discovered after women with autoimmune thyroid disease drank aloe vera for nine months.
In functional health we talk a lot about autoimmune disease, but one condition in particular keeps showing up more and more.

It’s now one of the most common autoimmune conditions in the world, and it happens when the immune system begins attacking the thyroid gland. Over time this can interfere with thyroid hormone production and lead to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, and cold intolerance.
But one of the most interesting parts of Hashimoto’s is what researchers often see happening underneath the surface. Many studies point to two major drivers involved in the process:
immune dysregulation and oxidative stress.
Researchers have been exploring whether certain natural compounds might influence these processes. One clinical study that caught attention looked at something surprisingly simple.
Aloe vera.
The Study
The study, published in the Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology, examined women with subclinical hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Subclinical hypothyroidism means the thyroid has started to struggle, but hormone levels have not yet fallen low enough to be classified as full hypothyroidism.
Researchers had participants drink aloe vera juice daily for nine months, while tracking several thyroid markers throughout the study. Two of the most important markers they monitored were the antibodies that drive Hashimoto’s:
TPO antibodies and TG antibodies. These antibodies are produced when the immune system mistakenly identifies the thyroid as a threat and begins attacking it.
In addition to antibodies, the researchers also measured thyroid hormones like TSH and free T4 to see whether thyroid function itself changed over time. TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone, is produced by the pituitary gland and tells the thyroid how hard to work, while T4 (thyroxine) is the primary hormone produced by the thyroid that helps regulate metabolism, energy levels, and overall metabolic activity.
What Happened
Over the course of the nine-month study, researchers observed several notable shifts.
Levels of thyroid antibodies significantly decreased, suggesting that the immune attack on the thyroid may have been reduced during the intervention. At the same time, TSH levels dropped while free thyroid hormone levels improved.
In other words, thyroid function moved in a more favorable direction for many of the participants. The findings suggested that aloe vera may have influenced both thyroid autoimmunity and thyroid hormone balance in this group of women.
Why Researchers Think This Might Happen
Aloe vera contains several compounds known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Both of these are particularly relevant when it comes to autoimmune disease.
Oxidative stress is believed to play a role in autoimmune thyroid conditions because reactive oxygen species can damage thyroid tissue and amplify immune signaling. Scientists often measure oxidative stress using markers like 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), which reflects DNA damage caused by free radicals.
When oxidative stress increases, immune activity and tissue damage often rise alongside it. Because of this connection, compounds that help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress may indirectly influence autoimmune processes occurring in the thyroid.
Why This Study Is So Interesting
This study does not mean aloe vera is a cure for Hashimoto’s. But it highlights something important about autoimmune disease.
Autoimmune conditions rarely exist in isolation. They are influenced by multiple biological systems working together such as immune signaling, oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic health. When those systems shift, the behavior of autoimmune diseases can shift as well.
What makes this study compelling is that a relatively simple intervention appeared to influence measurable markers of thyroid autoimmunity. And it reinforces something functional medicine has been exploring for years. Sometimes supporting the body’s underlying systems can change the environment in which autoimmune disease operates.
The Takeaway
Most conventional treatment approaches for Hashimoto’s focus on replacing thyroid hormone. And while that can be incredibly helpful for managing symptoms, it doesn’t always answer the bigger question: why did the immune system start attacking the thyroid in the first place? It’s a little like putting more gas in a car without checking why the engine light came on.
Research like this reminds us that autoimmune conditions are rarely caused by just one thing. They’re influenced by a whole network of biological processes working together behind the scenes. Inflammation, oxidative stress, gut health, and immune regulation can all shape how autoimmune diseases behave over time. When we start understanding those patterns, functional testing and root-cause approaches begin to make a lot more sense. Instead of just managing symptoms, we can start giving the body a helping hand in restoring balance and supporting the systems that keep us healthy in the first place.
